Diffusion-Diffraction Phenomenon in multi-PFG experiments

چکیده
Using pulsed-field-gradient (PFG) experiments, the sizes of the pores in ordered porous media can be estimated from the diffraction-like non-monotonic patterns that the signal attenuation curves exhibit [1]. A different diffraction pattern is observed when the experiment is extended to a larger number (N) of diffusion gradient pulse pairs as shown in Figure 1. When gradients of the same strength are applied along the direction perpendicular to the boundaries, diffusion pulse durations (δ) are small, and for extreme values of the diffusion times (∆) and mixing times (tm), the MR signal attenuation is given by

Double-PFG Diffusion-Diffraction in Ellipsoidal Pores
Repeated application of diffusion gradient pulse pairs [1] in a pulsed field gradient (PFG) experiment provides important insights into pore microstructure. For example, the dimensions and eccentricity of yeast cells were measured from the fourth order term of the double-PFG signal attenuation when the mixing time between the two encoding blocks is long [2]. In this abstract, we propose an alte...

متن کاملPersistence of diffusion-diffraction features in double-PFG experiments conducted on size distribution phantoms
One of the most important attributes of diffusion NMR is that it can employ restricted diffusion to probe microstructures of opaque samples. The single-pulsed-field-gradient (s-PFG) methodology (Fig. 1A) employs a pair of diffusion-sensitizing PFGs that are separated by an interval in which the diffusion process takes place. When a specimen is characterized by a very narrow size distribution or...
متن کاملDetecting diffusion-diffraction patterns in size distribution phantoms using double-pulsed field gradient NMR: Theory and experiments.
NMR observable nuclei undergoing restricted diffusion within confining pores are important reporters for microstructural features of porous media including, inter-alia, biological tissues, emulsions and rocks. Diffusion NMR, and especially the single-pulsed field gradient (s-PFG) methodology, is one of the most important noninvasive tools for studying such opaque samples, enabling extraction of...
متن کاملNovel diffusion-diffraction patterns in double-PFG NMR afford accurate microstructural information in size distribution phantoms
Introduction. The most important methodology to date in diffusion NMR and MRI is the single-pulsed-field-gradient (s-PFG) which enables accurate measurement of the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) in restricting compartments. When s-PFG experiments are conducted with sufficiently long diffusion periods in monodisperse restricted compartments, the diffusion-diffraction minima can be observed...
